Koh Kret Island

An island located in the middle of the Chao Phraya River, Koh Kret presents a unique opportunity to sample a traditional Thai way of life, without straying too far from Bangkok. Founded in the Thonburi period by ethnic Mons, the little island-village is still home to their descendants, who have managed to preserve the original lifestyle to a remarkable degree.

Pottery is the main occupation on Koh Kret. Visitors to the island can enjoy demonstrations of the traditional Mon-style pottery that Koh Kret is famous for, at the museum located near Wat Poramai-yikawat. The island’s craftsmen are renowned for their skill and workmanship, producing beautiful pieces with intricate designs and the signature red-black finish.

The island’s pottery museum also showcases collections made by local islanders, and photography is permitted here.

Koh Kret is a delightful island to walk around. Watch the natives go about their everyday chores, and sample some delicious Thai desserts (Khanom), another produce the island is famous for. There are also several Mon-style temples and shrines to discover; all very different from the ones found on mainland Bangkok.
Joining a bike tour to Koh Kret is a fun energetic way to explore the island, and the tour companies will arrange your transport to and from the Landmark Hotel. To get to Koh Kret by yourself, you can take a taxi to the Sanam Nua pier, and from there it’s only a ten-baht ferry ride across.

Alternatively, you could join a cruise to Koh Kret from the Maharat Pier. The tour leaves at 09:00 and returns at 15:00. A boat tour to the island is available on Sundays. For 300 baht (adults) and 150 baht (children), the tour which also leaves from the Maharat Pier introduces visitors to the main highlights of Koh Kret.
