Thai and foreign banks operating in Thailand offer a wide range of banking services. English is spoken at the main branches. Banking hour are generally from 0830-1530 Mon-Fri, except on public and bank holidays. Many banks now have branches in major department stores. These branches are open for much longer hours and operate on weekends offering most services.

Non-residents must provide their passports as identification and banks will most often require a work permit. Non-residents must also provide evidence of the source of the funds that will be deposited into the account. It is becoming increasingly difficult for foreign nationals without work permits to open saving account with Thai banks.
Cheque accounts (current account) may not be opened by non-residents without a valid Thai work permit. Be aware that writing cheques that bounce in Thailand not only incurs bank fees but also may attract penalties.
Some banking transactions can be a lengthy process so allow enough time when opening accounts, applying for credit cards are usually provided when an account is opened.
ATMs are widely available throughout Bangkok, on the streets, in shopping complexes, BTS stations, convenience stores etc. ATMs are also available in provincial cities and many country towns throughout Thailand.
Most Thai banks offer internet banking and telephone banking services. It is possible to access account histories, transfer funds locally or internationally and pay bills remotely. Check what is available with your bank.
Often your bank’s internet site will provide a good source of information in English about the range of services available. This is particularly useful if you do not have access to a main branch.
