Phi
Phi Islands, Krabi, Southern Thailand
Since The extensive devastation
and loss of life on Phi Phi, the Island has, some would say miraculously
sprung back to life. It is in fact now, if not completely back to
normal, then well on its way, to being so. More than 20 hotels are
now operating at full tilt whilst more than 100 shops have been
opened. Debris has disappeared and activities such as diving,
snorkelling and much more have reappeared and are flourishing.
A recent statement
by the Thai government stated that the plan was to target the up-market
end of the tourism community
and although fewer tourists would result they would be bigger spenders
whilst at the same time lessening the impact on the Island’s delicate
environmental system. Prices too would increase as charges could
go from 5,000 to 30,000 Baht for the coming high season. That is
a range of about $125 to 800 per night-high so in anyone’s book
However Phi Phi has all the
attractions of a paradise, and if tourist numbers are manageable,
it should stay that way. As you probably already know Phi Phi is
made up of two main islands in Thailand’s Krabi province. It is
reachable by a quick boat ride from Phuket the much better known
and world famous tourism island destination. The Islands are Phi
Phi Don and Phi Phi Li with the former being the bigger of the two
and the one with all of the tourism attractions. Perhaps the most
popular of all attractions besides the beaches on Phi Phi is diving.
The attraction and experience is nothing short of magnificent, with
warm, gentle waters and great visibility you are sure to enjoy the
immediate area regardless of your level of expertise. There’s also
snorkelling aplenty if diving is not really to your liking. This
too can be a wonderful experience as there are abundances of local
fish that are as curious about you as you are about them.
Kayaking too can be enjoyed
at Phi Phi, and one must not forget the delight of Island hopping
on a long tail boat. One must not forget that game fishing is popular
here and if that’s not enough try your hand at rock climbing or
simply trekking. Oh, and don’t forget the magnificent beaches; they’re
everywhere. At increased prices one can also surmise that the hotels
that have reopened have also increased in quality of both amenities
and service. Well, they have.
