Khon Sawan Lake is located in the district of the same naem, 38 km from town. The lake is home to several varieties of teal (wild ducks). Though access is still difficult, the Wua Daeng Caves in Nong Bua Daeng district are worth a visit because of their are worth a visit because of their unusual formations.

Ban Khwao is noted for the quality of its elaborately patterned hand-woven silk. The village is 13 km from town on Highway 225.

Phra That Nong Sam Mun, an old Buddhist shrine, is located 18 km from Phu Khieo district. It is believed to have been built in the same period as Phra That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom province. Recently restored, Phra That Nong Sam Mun has a reclining Buddha image and a series of sculptures depicting aspects of heaven and hell.

Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary in Khon San district shelters a wide variety of wildlife and includes a protected wetland area. A royal palace in the sanctuary is located on a wide plain known as Thung Kamang. The Phu Khieo reservoir is another attractive spot to visit.

Pa Hin Ngam National Park is a forested area in Amphoe Thep Sathit situated 140 kilometers away from Chaiyaphum. Huge rocks of curious shapes are scattered throughout the area. In early rainy season during May to July, Pa Hin Ngam is carpeted with pink flowers growing wild. In cool season around December to January in the rock crevices grow yellow orchids and a variety of wild flowers throughout the forest. Camping sites and accommodation are available.

Chulabhorn Dam (Nam Phrom Dam), located in an exceptionally scenic area, supplies water to local irrigation projects. Accommodation near the dam is available. To get there, take the Chaiyaphum- Chum Phae highway, 90 km to the junction of the Chum Phae-Lom Sak highway, then turn left and go another 77 km to the dam.  Chai yaphum Elephant Round-up that took place at Ban Khai, located 12 km from town, has been discontinued after the governor had a nightmare that depicted elephants injuring people.

Ban Khai and Chaiyaphum ELephant Round-Up located 12 kilometers from the provincial city, Ban Khai or Ban Khai Mun Phaeo is Chaiyaphum's elephant village. The main occupation of the villagers is to tame captured wild elephants. Being home of as numerous elephants as Surin, Chaiyaphum has had the elephant round-up revived and it has become an annual event which takes place in January.

Festival
An annual festival centres on the revered Chao Pho Phraya Lae shrine, which stands on the banks of the Pla Tai pond as a memorial to the founder of Chaiyaphum who was killed in the immediate area in 1826.The festival starts on the first Wednesday of June and runs for seven days.
