Buri Ram Attractions: Phra Chao Yai
of Wat Hong is an old Buddha image built in the local
style and revered by the people of Buri Ram and
neighbouring
provinces.
Khao Kradon,
and extinct volcano, is located in Khao Kradong Park, 6 km
from town. The park is filled with a large variety of rate
plants. You can reach the top of Khao Kradong by car on a
winding road flanked with Buddha images or by taking the 265-metre
staircase leading up to the Phra Suphatthara
Bophit image and Prang Ku. The latter contains a replica
of a Buddha footprint. The lake at the foot of Khao Kradong
has an impressive view of the beautiful Phra Suphatthara Bophit
located on the summit.
Wat Khao Ang-kharn,
a temple on another extinct volcano, Khao Angkharn, is located
in Nang rong district, 20 km from Prasat Phanom Rung. Example
of Dvaravati peroid sandstone "sema" (temple boundary markers)
have been found here. The unusual architecture has its origins
in many different periods.
Rao Soo Monument
was built beside Laharn Sai-Ta Phraya Road (3068). The mounment
commemorates the heroic deeds of soldiers, policemen and ordinary
citizens who fought against communists who resisted the construction
of the road.
Ban Kruat Cultural
Centre is located at Ban Kruat Vitthaya School, 66 km
from Buri Ram itself. The Centre houses ancient earthenware
produced from about a 100 kilns excavated from a site in Ban
Kruat district. The kilns are believed to be about 1,000 years
od. The size of the excavation indicates the area was an important
centre for pottery production.
Festival
Phanom Rung Festival, is
held on the full-moon day of the fifth lunar month (April).
People go to Prasat Phanom Rung to pay respect to the Buddha
footprint and make merit. Local authorities also organise
cultural activities such as a Khmer cultural procesion and
a light and sound show on the history of Phanom Rung.
Boat Racing
Festival, takes place annually in Satuk district on the
Mun River during the first weekend of November. The races
attract boat crews from around the region.
Isan Kite Festival, takes
place on the second weekend of December at Huai Chorakhe Reservoir
in Buri Ram town. In addition to various kite contests, there
is float parade depicting the 12 signs of the zodiac, and
a beauty contest.
