Real Chips in Phuket

There’s finally a place in Phuket that has real chips. Some people will say there’s not a difference between your normal French fry and what the English call “chips”. Those people are wrong. Fast food places generally sell French fries purely because they are quick to cook. They lack all taste, flavor, and texture except for what a three inch coating of salt gives them.

Chips on the other hand, are chunky, thick, sometimes cut with a serrated edge, and taste so much better. The secret has always been to cook a fresh, high quality potato twice at 2 different temperatures. Chips and Dips has got the chips making business down.

Chips and Dips is located on Chao Fa East, just before the Chalong Circle. It is the last building at the end of modern shop houses. Brightly colored red with the words Chips and Dips in large letters.

Living up to its name, Chips and Dips offers a large range of dips to go with the chips. Standard ketchup, spicy tomato sauce, mayo, garlic mayo, cocktail dip, sour cream dip, hot chili dip and a variety of standard dips are available for 15 Baht, with hot dips like mushroom sauce, pepper dip, and peanut dip available for 30 Baht. All the standard drinks are there and priced fairly from 10 to 30 Baht and alcoholic drinks from 40 up.

The chips are cooked fresh and taste exquisite (Chips can be exquisite? Yes). There are two floors, with the upper floor giving a great view of the mayhem around Chalong circle. The near misses of small motorbikes just dodging out of the way of the cement trucks is just like the gladiatorial spectacles of old.

There are other items on the menu, burgers, cheese burgers, fish burgers, chicken and pork sate, spring rolls, chicken nuggets, German currywurst , Belgium and beef stew all for reasonable prices.

These are the best chips in Phuket. The only criticism I have about the place is that it opens from 11am to 11pm. Being within staggering distance from Chalong pier, the prospects of this place are great. For the real English experience, it should be open until 3am, because back in the UK after a night out on the town its always chips and kebabs. So, where’s the kebab shop?
