Safety At Sea

Over confidence and sloppy preparation can be fatal. Be mindful of safety issues each time you dive.

• Never dive alone.
• Schedule dives to allow sufficient recovery time. Diving too soon before or after a flight can result in the Bends, either in the water or up in the air.
• Never eat heavily prior to a dive. Cramp could ensue.
• Don't drink before a dive. The affect of alcohol multiplies when diving, leading to poor judgement. Even a binge the night before can be dangerous.

• Cut back on smoking to reduce the risk of complications. Diving can put a strain on the lungs.
• A refresher course of procedures and safety practices may be needed if you haven't dived recently. Inform your instructor if you lack experience or haven't dived in six months.

• Look for PADI-certified dive shops. Check Padi.com to cofirm a school is accredited. Ask around at resort to see who is recommended.
• Ask about class sizes before signing up with a dive school. Also check on what should happen if you fail to grasp the requied skills within in your course period.
• Read to inform yourself of dive conditions at your destination.
